It was a pleasure to be able to support and volunteer this morning with a wonderful organization, @themagicyarnproject. I learned that not everyone can wear regular, faux wigs because sometimes the skin of the scalp is just way too sensitive. The project started when a lady, who was supporting a friend’s daughter who was going through cancer treatments, came up with the idea to crochet beanies and then add various accoutrements on them so that they resemble a Disney Princess or a Superhero.

To participate in The Magic Yarn Project it wasn’t too complicated, though it did help to have two people working on the head. The beanies were already made ahead of time with a flower and a pretty jewel also glued on top. At the event, we were given a bundle of yarn, which one person separated into 3 strands and handed that to the other person who would put a crochet hook through the bottom loops tying a knot to keep the strands attached. Around the entire head the yarn is slowly tied on and I got to know a little bit about the lady helping me named Julie. She was a member of the church where this event took place and had been helping with this organization for a bit. She works at a local Christian Elementary/High School and really enjoys her coffee!

Once we were done attaching the yarn to the beanie, we took it to one of the main helpers who proceeded to braid the yarn strands as if they were hair cascading down. The hair/yarn was then tied off with a pretty bow and given another sparkly jewel.

It was quite a lovely scene to see so many members of our community come out to support this amazing cause. I, myself, have been connected to cancer through my mother, grandmother, and a great grandmother passing away of different types.

Several of my friends’ children are currently going through treatments. Anything we can do to make someone’s life just that much more comfortable is a great thing indeed! These yarn wigs will be sent, for free, to children all over the world. If you would like to take part in this and/or see if there is a chapter in your area, please check the linktree.
